What is Large Format Printing?
Also known as wide format printing, the history of this digital printing technique is very short compared with that of the print industry overall because it only emerged at the end of the last century.
Wide-format digital printing services have evolved rapidly in the past 10-15 years after inkjet technology was pioneered by HP and Canon. The first wide format digital printers were Electrostatic technology, which pre-dates inkjet and was pioneered by Xerox.
Roll-fed and flatbed wide format digital printing refers to a digital printer, which is roll-fed or has a table where the substrate is loaded. Either the roll is fed through the printer or the table moves under a print head array.
UV solvent inks are then printed directly to the substrate through inkjets. Solvent-based inks adhere to a wide range of substrates and have exceptionally good weather, UV, and abrasion resistance.
Using inkjet technology, wide format printing services are more economical than other print methods such as screen printing for most short-run (low quantity) print projects, depending on the size and type of substrates.
Printing projects that can be custom-created range from real estate signs to hanging banners, vehicle wraps, wall coverings, and other various large-format graphics.

Printing Across Industries
Retail Printing
Retailers use wide-format printing for in-store displays, posters, and signage that highlight products and promotions. It’s also used for point-of-purchase displays, banners, and outdoor signage to boost brand visibility and attract customers.
Hospitality
Hotels, restaurants, and convention centers rely on wide-format printing for wall murals, elevator wraps, and event signage. It is also used for branded materials such as trade show displays, backdrops, and promotional signage to reinforce their identity.
Construction
Construction companies use wide-format printing for durable, weather-resistant banners, hoardings, and site signage. These prints help showcase ongoing projects, provide essential safety information, and promote the company’s brand to workers and the public.
Events Industry
Concerts, festivals, and sports events benefit from wide-format printing for stage graphics, directional signage, and promotional materials like posters, flyers, and banners. Large-format prints enhance the event experience and increase brand awareness.
Creating Your Designs
High-Res Images:
Using high-resolution images is crucial for wide-format printing to ensure sharp, clear visuals without distortion. A resolution of at least 300 DPI (dots per inch) is recommended to maintain image quality in large-scale prints.
Color Accuracy
Color accuracy is essential in wide-format printing to match the final output with the original design. Using a calibrated monitor, color profiles, and test prints helps achieve precise color reproduction in the final print.
Avoid Overcrowding
Maintaining a balanced design is key to creating visually appealing prints. Designers should use negative space effectively, avoiding overly crowded layouts to improve readability, spacing, and overall visual presentation.
Viewing Distance
Designers must consider viewing distance when creating graphics for wide-format printing. Images viewed up close require higher resolution and detail, while those seen from afar can use lower resolution without sacrificing clarity.
File Formatting
Choosing the correct file format, such as PDF, TIFF, or EPS, is necessary for wide-format printing. Files should be sized appropriately, with sufficient margins and bleed, to ensure proper alignment and print quality.
